Starbase 34 Starfleet Compilation Mod Update - Mods
  Posted by: Starblade. on 04-04-2009 @ 22:26 - Source: Mod Team, 34
This News Item has been viewed 6,639 times
It's very exciting to bring you the latest in news from the Starbase 34 mod team. We've been hard at work for months now, putting together the project the way we want it, the way we think Starfleet would be, and we've included models from across the community, some of which we've been busy upgrading, improving or working into our vision of the future.

Just to recap what you already know, the Starfleet compilation mod is going to include:

- A radically altered way of playing A2, with modifications to standard ship types and gameplay
- The considerable benefits of the A2 Physics Project version X 1.2
- Over seventy separate ship types and classes
- Fully integrated fighter, bomber, and carrier models usable with 1.1
- Extensive inclusion of mod content for future potetial upgrade to 1.2.5 patch status
- Completely re-written approaches to both research and special weapons
- More than fifteen separate stations and turrets, along with seven separate shipyards
- All the best of what you know from modders like Aad Moerman, Fireball, Achilles, Major Payne, Pizza the Hutt, and numerous others (all used with proper credit and permission where required -- we hope)
- Some new models of starship never before seen for A2, including a BRAND NEW DREADNOUGHT model never before seen --not just never before seen in A2, but specifically designed for this project
- Numerous hero ships (no God ships, though), and some allied support as well
- The single most comprehensive Starfleet project ever conceived for A2, or arguably for ANY modded game....

It's long been said that the hardest part about modding a Star Trek game is getting the Starfleet side right. We don't just want to get it right. We want it to be everything you'd expect in a Starfleet space combat simulator. And where it isn't, we want you to be able to make the changes you want to make, wherever you want. That's what makes this community great, and Starbase 34 is proud to be the vanguard of the modding community.

Look for the Starfleet Compilation Mod sometime soon, right here at Armada II Files.

- the Kid

One thing I forgot to mention in the news item: Not all the starships seen above are perfectly to scale with each other. For obvious reasons the shuttles and fighters simply WON'T be to scale. This is still a work in progress, and it'd be greatly preferred if comments were about the mod generally rather than just the screenshot..... thanks!

Well so far so good, when can we expect it? And is there any more information available about what we can expert in terms of the radical changes? And don't stone me for asking when, it's a legitamte question! *braces for the rocks to start flying at me*

70 ships for a single race in A2? Do you really need that many? Are you guys doing the other sides as well? I think 70 ships sounds like a good number for ALL the stock races lol.

In one of my older mods I had about 60 ships for the feds and about 20 for each of the other races except the botg and species, the biggest problem is finding room for all the shipyards... it's too bad nobody can figure out how to crack that 14 ship limit!

Looking at that picture I'd say the prometheus needs shrinking and the galaxy evo enlarging a bit. I look forward to this mod with much anticipation.

I do hope that the other species also have more ships finally...
Don't get me wrong, I like the Federation ships much and they will always have more ships that the others, but it's just not fitting to see one race have far more ship models...

So I take it there are also more than the regular two yards?

Major Payne: The actual model builders behind these ships will all be appropriately credited in the file. The mod work is being done by myself, Achilles, Avon, Dan1025, elevatormusic, Fireball, Freyr, icewolf132, Jetfreak, k_merse, and starfox1701, with past assistance from Chiletrek, thunderfoot006 and Ragnar.

Chief: The radical changes mostly have to do with damage allocation, physics modification, and the replacement of the pod-based research system with a parts-based research system. Special weapons will be available but energy will not recharge very quickly, requiring you to use them sparingly and tactically. And we're including fighters, minelayers and ECM in ways they've never really been used in a mod before.

No idea when it'll be done. I'm hoping for next month.
Also not sure if we'll be doing other races. This one's been so much fun to do, we haven't really planned ahead. wink

Intrepid: Yeah, it's overkill. But it's not our fault Starfleet is awesome. big grin

scooter: "blue shields like in the movies".... they're still going to use 'bubble' shielding. that's hardcoded but Achilles has put a nice little improvement in the 'blue shields mod' that we're hoping to improve.

Keep in mind that I included the position of the directional light (seek and ye shall find), and Freedom and Miranda are some of the closest ships to the light, which may explain the texture lighting. There is some inconsistency in the texture colours but we're a compilation mod, so that's to be expected. It's nothing that will distract your gameplay, though. Hopefully.

Mystery: There are seven shipyards, three major stations capable of building ships, and a whole lotta ships. I admit it's massive overkill to have this many ships for a single side. But we weren't going for canon representation, we were going for inclusion. If anything, I expect we'll catch some criticism for the ships we left OUT of this mod....

Technically, you should scrub me off that list of modders who've worked on this mod, Kid.
Especially as I've actually done no work for it. lol........I'm just happy to have been along for the ride watching you guys work.

Looking forward to beta testing the pants off it !

Well the mod looks like it's gonna be fun can't wait to try it out, I know you said that there are not immediate plans for doing the other races but if this mod is as good as we all know it will be and for balance sake it I hope you guys will consider it (I'm partial to the Klingons & Borg) winkwink

That sound cool. I like the blue shields I have now just that when a weapon hits it the spreed is minimal. I like the large area dispursment apose to the small one.

Damage allocation changes sound intriguing. Squire did some amazing work with damage textures and only certain poarts of a ship showing up damaged when certain systems took hits in KA2 and his damage texture sets were amazing. I hope these will be comparable.

You mistake damage allocation (through scripting) for visible damage. We haven't done what KA2 offered, and what FahreS has recently included in his Planck class starship as well. Fireball's models offer something similar, but we focused on just getting the mod together with a new script style, rather than re-doing every model's damage textures.

Will you guys be using the Courageous class ship in this mod? didn't see it in the pic, and she's a lovely ship. I personally use one that I ported from bridge commander. While the hardpoints are crude, they do work.

Yep. She's one of my favourite non-canon vessels. We're using Jetfreak's re-texture.
