Star Trek Armada 2: Yesteryears Update June 28th 2007

The update you have all been waiting for, now lets get to it.

Itís been a while since we had an official update for Yesteryears, the mod has been moving at a fairly fast rate these last couple of months. Many things have been achieved and many more have been decided upon.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been busy getting the GUI's complete for the races in Yesteryears. They are coming along well thanks to Syf who is applying the alpha channels to them. I have also been working on a fair bit of the coding. The resources are now in game with correct names and descriptions and currently all that is needed for the are the models for the nebulas and moons.

Also for you TMP era fans out there, you may be happy to know that I have been experimenting with Federation pulse phasers to make the mod more canon. Its still a work in progress at this stage but the results are promising. I hope to have these sorted out for the next update.

Last update I said we would have something special for you, and Syf and I keep our promises.

Be warned though, if you have a weak bladder you may wish to turn back now. Also the 2A-A2 team takes no responsibility for any damage to hardware caused by your reactions to what is posted in this post.

Now I would like to announce that today the 28th of June which is not only MSFC's 2nd Birthday but is also the day that the 2A-A2 team releases the much await details on the Gorn for Yesteryears.

The Gorn Hegemony is the 6th race of Yesteryears, they were added along with the Terran Empire as multiplayer compatible races due to already appearing in the single player campaign. The Gorn are a species of reptiles from the Beta Quadrant that appeared in TOS and Enterprise and were mentioned on numerous occasions like in Enterprise and the movie Insurrection.

Many of you have no doubt heard myself and Syf say on several occasions that the Gorn do not follow the fan accepted designs that were featured in the Starfleet Command series of games. Both Syf and myself personally dislike those designs so we took it upon ourselves to do something different with the Gorn for Yesteryears. Syf found a concept image of a Gorn ship that was going to appear in an episode of Deep Space Nine but was not included at the last minute. We both liked the design and used it as a basis for the Gorn fleet in Yesteryears, so you could say the Gorn are semi-canon.

We have also decided to ignore much of what has been said about the Gorn in the non canon games like Starfleet Command and Starfleet Battles but have adopted parts that we liked. In the mod the Gorn are enemies of the Romulan and Klingon Empires, with their closest allies being the Federation.

In the Yesteryears timeline the Gorn has survived countless invasions during the 22nd and 23rd centuries by both the Klingons and Romulans. These invasions were abandoned when if was obvious that the Gorn Defence Perimeter was too strong to be breached. Like the other races, the Gorn have constructed new styles of ships in the late 23rd century and much of their current technology has come from what was left behind by the Klingons and Romulans. Due to this the Gorn use a combination of technology including their weaponry which includes phasers, photon torpedoes and plasma torpedoes.

Like the Starfleet Command series Gorn ships are big and powerful but are also sluggish and slow. Due to this Gorn ships are expensive, especially their dreadnaughts and battleships which are rarely seen outside their boarders due to their cost. The Gorn utilize their destroyers and light cruisers much more than the other races due to their speed and good turning rates.

Out of all the races in Yesteryears, the Gorn are the race that is by far the most complete. The Gorn have 95% of all their models in game and working with only a few left to be required to be modelled by Syf and hardpointed by myself.

Well, ahem, there you have it. Sufficed to say, Yesteryears isn't going very quickly on the development front...sure. Steam-rolling ahead, there's enough there to keep any avid YY fan going for some time. What particularly struck my attention though was the attention to story-line. Those paying attention may have noticed that the missions will be compatible with the mod (or vice-versa) but we've seen extremely little into what could actually be going on. Perhaps this sparks some thought with some of you as to what could happen in it.

Personally, I predict the Federation missions (guaranteed, eh?) will involve them fighting off the Klingons and Romulans, like they are usually seen doing. Though my guess could be anyone else's at this stage. Perhaps some of the missions will revolve around assisting the Gorn? I think the Klingons are pretty assured as the next campaign playable race though. Again, no idea on that. Anybody got anything for that? Anyhow, a nice long update here, definitely a lot to take in.

I like the gallery it is very exsplosive and that is COOL and this sounds very very good indeed, good work majest (I think anyway could someone confirm).

Ah Joel, you beat Ash to it. lol. I sent him a PM about this. Lightening news poster we have here. wink

Anyway its true the Federation have a campaign, though not the first one. As for the rest I am sure I posted it somewhere but I will keep you all guessing about how are the campaigns for and who each of them are fighting. stick out tongue

@#1 Yes I am part of the 2A-A2 team, though I pefer Majestic, a 0 poster took the name Majestic here which is a pain in the backside for me.

@#2 It is stated in Enterprise that it is the Gorn Hegemony. I believe the game SFC used Confederacy which isn't all that canon. Each to their own though. It also makes the Gorn more different between Yesteryears and James KA2 Mod.

@#3 Thanks James, though technically spealing there are no canon designs for the Gorn. SFC is a game and not canon, I said semi-canon for Yesteryears Gorn as the design we based our Gorn off was going to be in an early DS9 episode but dropped at the last minute. Then again the SFC Gorn are also semi-canon so either way neither the Gorn we have or the Gorn your using is any more canon than the other. wink

Well yes, technically regarding Gorn ships there is no canon appearance, but the ones in SFC and KA are considered the "fan accepted canon'. That said, any new interpretations are welcome, and as you say, it makes the Gorn Confederacy/Hegemony in our two mods different.

I think the Gorn were refered to as the Gorn Hegemony in the original tabletop SFB game, and thats were Enterprise seems to have got it from. In KA I believe they never directly refered to the Gorn government in any way, they just called them "The Gorn". The name "Gorn Confederacy" comes from SFC. I actually used both names, the KA2 Manual tells how the Gorn Haegemony became the Gorn Confederacy.

Looking forward to this, the addition of the Gorn will give this mod a distinct advantage over others in terms of features.. wink
