  Modding Permissions
This Page has been viewed 11,592 times

Welcome to the Modding Permissions Page. This is a guide for those of you who are thiking about re-releasing someone else's work. As many of you already know that when mods are converted and/or remodded by a different modder, there is a code of conduct, to be adhered to . This is just a little reminder to new modders, new community members and everyone in general about how to go about getting permission to remod, update or convert another person's mod/file and the ramifications of not doing so.

Note- All it takes is one email, not more that 5 minutes of your time. Therefore there are no excuses.

Porting from another game or updating/remodding another mod.

  1. Getting Permission.

If you are porting mods from another game or remodding an existing mod that is not belonging to you, you must first get the original author's permission. It is very rare that a Modder will disallow his/her mod to be reused so there should be no excuse for not asking for permission. If they refuse then you should not release the mod at any stage, in any shape or form.

  2. When Posting.

If you do get the all clear to proceed with using the original author's model you must give them credit in your readme. This is usually, an acknowledgement of who they are, their email address, and URL of their homepage if they have one. Make sure you have Proof of this. We accept files on the modders word that he has complied with the rules, so as a result we don't demand to see every single permission request.

Regardless, to protect your reputation it is advisable to keep the emails where permission is granted, so if there is a problem in the future (ie, someone accused you of using something without permission) you can simply provide a copy of your email of your request and the response from the author which will immediately settle things without room for further argument.

If a mod is submitted without permission

  1. Screening Process

We do check mods when they are uploaded, but we are only human and mistakes are occasionally pointed out to us when the file is already on the site. If we become aware of a problem when a file is on the site then the mod will be suspended while we investigate.

  2. File Deletion

If we do find evidence that a mod published in good faith used materials stolen from another mod or otherwise violated our site rules then we reserve the right to remove the file.

In such cases, the decision of the site manager is final.

  3. Banning

Depending on the severity of the claim or if you are a serial culprit (i.e you have done this more than once and it is proven so) or even if you upload several stolen mods that never make it to the publication you will more than likely be given a ban from Filefront. This can range from a short ban to lengthy ban or a permanent ban with all your Mods removed from the Filefront Database. This is nearly always decided by the Site Manager of the site in consultation with the rest of the staff. In such cases, the decision of the site manager is final.

This will undoubtedly damage your reputation beyond repair, and in a modding community that can spell the end of a modder.

Now you have been informed of the correct procedures on permission requesting. Take it as the Golden Rule - Get permission first before altering someone else's work and if in doubt, ask.

Simple as that, therefore good luck in your enterprises in the modding community, may you succeed in all your ventures.

    Thank you
